Laura Mulvey and the Male Gaze theory

Kylie Minogue- Im spinning around: This music video starts with a shot of Kylies feet walking through the club, from the shoes she is wearing and the way she is walking we can already tell that she takes care of her looks. As the video goes on we get more close-ups of Kylies body parts, including many shots of her bum in very skimpy shorts. This goes with Laura Mulveys theory, men are constantly looking at her, she is the centre of attention. She uses her body and her body language to get this attention, including dancing on the bar. One aspect that goes against the theory is when Kylie is leading the man to the dance floor, she has done the work to seduce him and she is the one leading him away from where she is sitting. However the sexy dancing shows that the whole video really is sex based and seducing men is what Kylie wants out of her actions.

Scouting for girls- She's so lovely: Again in this music video the first thing you see of the female is her shoes, again showing that she takes care of her looks by the type of red heel she is wearing. The lyrics of this song are all very flattering to the women but throughout the video the men are all drooling over her and she knows it. She's a fairly shy character but knows that all of the boys are staring and want her. This all goes with the Male Gaze theory as she is a tease, from the way she looks at the males to the way she sucks through a straw being very suggestive.

J-lo-On the floor: The video starts with J-lo getting out of a flash car and putting on expensive earrings, a man is driving the car with goes with the Male Gaze theory but she gets out of the car herself with no assistance from a male which goes against the theory. In the video there are rich men draped over sofas watching women sexy dance in front of them, this is treating women as if they are just mere objects but J-lo is doing the same, drooled over the sofa looking sexy she is even being served a whiskey by a woman. This is showing that money has power, not your gender. However throughout the video J-lo is in tight fitted or very skimpy clothing, a second J-lo is in amongst the 'common people' dancing on a stage, all eyes on her she knows exactly how to get males attention. And so the video goes against the theory in some aspects but it still goes for it too.
