Concept filming costume & make-up

For our main concept filming we decided to put our concept actress being me in all black with red lipstick. We did this because we wanted to portray a darker side of the music video through the concept clips. Having saying that we still kept it girly by using lace to keep it romantic- which goes with our song as she is singing about love.

Asking for permission to use songs

To ensure that our music video wouldn't go against any copyright laws we tweeted artists which we were using for our music video and website etc.

Filming day three

Day three of filming on of our locations was south weald, here we went for a more covered up look than we have before. We put Paige in a leotard, a shirt, black high waisted jeans and cut out boots. We used this look because it is edgy but also we wanted to cover her up more due to the location 1. being cold, 2. making it realistic. We also wanted to ensure the outfits chosen went with our target audience, which is why we aimed to keep everything on trend but with edge to it also.
This shows the lace on Paige's leotard

Here you can see the steps which we used quite a lot during our filming, we worked with angles making me stand up on the steps and have Paige beneath me, we also had the same shot but moved Paige round in the shot so that it almost time lapses.

This is Paiges completed look

We chose to use cut-out boots as they are on trend right now. Which displays our artist to be a fashion icon.

We used a hand chain to add some bling without being too in your face.

Effy inspiration

Here shows inspiration for our artist, her name is 'Effy' and she is from a popular tv show 'Skins' she embodies everything which our artist would, like being edgy but it coming naturally to the artist. We will play more with makeup as the song goes on, making her eyes the focus point of certain shots.

Target Audience feedback- Halfway through

We received feedback from a mixture of boys and girls half way through our production. This part we had only filmed part of the performance with no concept and this is what people said they liked and disliked. For the first improvement, a boy said how he wanted to see more people within the video because shots of the artist can get a bit repetitive. This can be resolved when we complete all our filming and add in conceptual ideas. Another person said how the time lapping could have created some confusion as some shots were from the beggining and some from the front. From this Ellie and I have decided we are going to have the first 20 seconds will create a attitude of the artist, as all the shots will be from behind, creating questions of who this artist may be and then the next 16 seconds will be the artist being established from the front. The lighting that first girl talks about is when the artist has the stars and rain projected on her. We chose to add a few seconds of this projection because all the other projections were happy and bright colours. This meant that by adding a darker projection, the backgrounds would stop being repetitive. When we received feedback that the artist smiled too much, we decided that will change our opening scene based on Miley Cyrus' music video of Wrecking Ball. The beginning of her video its just a close up of her face that really shows the emotion. This concentrates less on the artist dancing and more on the emotion and ability to lip sync to the viewer. The bits that contain the black shots are the parts that haven't yet been filmed. This was the video that the people above had previously watched in order to give their feedback.

An excellent first day of filming, this looks great. Useful still shots of settings and the first day of filming; I like the "good/ bad" examples.

Next, aim to develop your explanation and evaluation a little further. Link your comments back to your plans/ audience/ genre. Make clear why you were using each of the effects you created in the sports hall and then evaluate how successful they were/ how they show progress/ what you have learnt. In places, you seem to follow conventions and in other places you seem to challenge them - this is great, even greater if you explain how and why!

Mr A

We decided not to use the first shot because the artist looks uncomfortable and unnatural in the shot (which doesn't conform to the conventions of the genre, because within our genre the artist should be passionate and lively about their own song, which is what our artist doesn't portray.). We also feel that the artist standing there makes the viewer focus more on the actual artist rather than the shadow singing those lines of the lyrics.
The bad shot of the artist in the red back ground wasn't effective because the artist was too far over to the right and would have made it difficult for the viewer to see exactly who the artist is. Especially because these shot have the short duration of only 1 second anyway. The shot of the water being projected on to the artist and the stars, was bad because you couldn't see the mouth movement clearly enough whist she was lip syncing. Whereas, the pink cloud projection, you can clearly see the artist's face, which also attract to the target the audience because they want to see the artist fully, especially if they're are new to the industry.

Filming day 2

This is our first setting, here we filmed the intro and also a lot for the end shots. It was a good day and so we did a pan shot from the bright blue sky to the setting to slowly establish the setting and what she is doing. Putting Paiges hair in a bandana it makes her look more alternative and it is also good for when we first establish her as you can clearly see her face. We also used Doc martens, high black socks and a baggy shirt. This is because we wanted to take inspiration from the 'Skins' character 'Effy'.

This was our second setting of the day, it is a bridge over a A-road. At first it looked good but once we started filming we didn't like the shots as we felt like they were very typical and not very interesting. This outfit look is cut out boots with frilly socks, high waisted shorts, a T-shirt and a messy pony tail which has a hair cuff and also a hair chain in it. We felt like this went well with our artist as we were keeping it alternative.

Setting 3 is at 'south weald' it is a brick staircase which is very rustic. We kept the outfit the same as the second setting but we decided to put her hair down to change it up and keep the shots different.

These are photos of some of our settings, we did research on google maps and Google to see the location before we went there.  The last shot is of our set-up for the projection shots.

Costume inspiration

Costume inspiration

Here you can see some of our costume inspiration from celebrities and fashion icons. We wanted to go with a funky urban vibe but keep it fashionable instead of messy and plain. To do this we will mix colours and textures, including shirts and socks and lace.

Shot list 1

This is our first shot list, we allocated different parts of the song to concept or performance, so that we roughly know what to film for which seconds.

Filming day 1

Here are some photographs of us filming Paige on the day, this shows the projections on her.

Here is a photograph of Paige getting her shadow, from this point I then filmed at a certain angle so that you could only see the shadow and not see Paige which is the effect that we wanted to make.
This is our setting from a long shot, during filming we only used the screen to project images on, we used the sports hall as we were able to have it pitch black which meant that the projections stood out alot more when we filmed. Originally we were going to use the brick work to project the images onto but once we were set up the images looked so detailed and clear on the screen that we carried on our filming with the screen. This worked much better for us.

We decided that while we had the opportunity we would take some photos of Paige posing as the artist, this worked very well as I own a Pentax SLR camera, we used all sorts of filters which looked very effective with the shadow and Paige in the same shot.

Practice filming

Here is some of the filming we did in the half term, Some bits worked really well and so we will be using them in our final video but some of them (as featured in this video) didn't work so well. We learnt alot and progressed through the day, but we also heavily planned what we would be doing but making sure we were prepared with many different projections to use. With the rest of our filming we know to use more angles, as in our practice filming and also in our projection setting we used alot of simple mid shot, this is due to the fact we wanted alot of emphasis on the actual projections and the fact that it looks artistic.
What we learnt from the filming is that certain projections don't work, such as busy shots (the sea) or dark shots (the lanterns). We still want the artist to be seen, and have performance shown and so because of this we could only use certain projections, the ones that worked best are the pink clouds and the light coloured sparkles. We found these most effective as they look good but you can also focus on the artist, we didn't want to distract from the fact that this is a music video.
We also learnt what looks good and what doesn't when it comes to the shadow shot. At first we wanted the shadow almost talking to the artist, after filming this a couple of times we figured it didn't look right, and so we made the artist walk into the shot as the shadow walks out. Below is what looks good compared to what looks bad. By making a clear comparison between what looks good and what looks bad we were able to learn what to put into our final video and what to not. With the filming we will be editing it very specifically to also make sure it looks good.

Costume 1

Our first day of filming we did the projection part of our music video. In this part of the video we wanted to get across the singer looking much more dressed up than in the other parts of the video but keeping with the vibe we wanted her to have.
In order to do this we put our actress Paige in a Bright Blue midi skirt, which is out of shot, and a long sleeved cropped top which is white with bright letters over it. We teamed this with a luminous yellow statement necklace and straight but slightly messy hair. We made this decision as the artist will be typically 'in a club' in this part of the video, as in the other parts she will be 'outside' and have a much messier but alternative look. This is her dressed up as if she is going out.

Lip syncing practice

When doing the lip syncing practise I learnt alot. I did it with my group member Paige, at first we filmed it together both singing out loud before we filmed Paige singing on her own singing out loud. Next was me, I didn't sing I just mimed and when it came to watching it back we realised that it worked better when miming as you can make it look alot more realistic. And so we re-filmed Paiges. This was helpful as now we know who is better to do the performance in our music video and also we now know not to film it singing, but miming instead. Over exaggerating looks much more realistic. By doing this we learnt what not to do and what to do in our filming of our music video.
Because we have a very upbeat song we also want to have artist interaction/dancing in our video, this will make it look more professional and also fit the conventions of a real music video.

Song lyrics with ideas

We printed off our song lyrics and analysed them, this is because we wanted some of the shots to be parallel with the sound.
